How does a pub end up minus a town? Well, that’s the story of the South Western Hotel in Toompine. Built in 1893, it’s all that remains of a once-bustling frontier opal town. After opal was discovered in the 1860s, the pub became a popular stop for Cobb & Co coaches and a hangout for miners and pastoralists. By the early 1900s, Toompine had a police station, butcher, blacksmith, stables, and even a few houses. Today, this beautifully restored pub is open seven days a week, serving barista coffee, meals, and offering great fishing and fossicking nearby. Toompine awaits!
