Our Commitment to Country, Culture and Community

Sustainability Statement

Sustainable tourism in Quilpie means travelling with care, respect, and community spirit. At the Quilpie Visitor Information Centre, we are proud to lead the way in sustainable tourism in Outback Queensland, aligning our operations with environmental responsibility, cultural inclusion, and strong community connections.

The Quilpie Visitor Information Centre is committed to operating in an environmentally responsible, culturally respectful, and community-focused way. Located on the lands of the Boonthamurra, Bidjara, Kullilli, Mardigan and Wonkumarra peoples, we honour our responsibility to care for Country while helping visitors connect with the stories, spirit, and people of Outback Queensland.

Our sustainability approach blends practical environmental action, cultural inclusion, regional partnerships and economic support — ensuring we contribute positively to the future of Quilpie Shire.

Sustainable Practices at Quilpie Shire VIC

  • Plastic Reduction

We proudly support single-use waste reduction. Our VIC no longer supplies single-use plastic cups and has introduced a filtered water refill station with a digital bottle counter, promoting reusable bottles and sustainable travel habits.

  • Digital Visitor Tools

We offer paperless visitor servicing with QR-linked maps, online itinerary downloads, and digital brochures, helping reduce print waste while providing real-time information at travellers’ fingertips.

  • Online Bookings

To streamline the visitor experience and reduce paperwork, we encourage online bookings for experiences like the Quilpeta Night Show and Eromanga Natural History Museum tours. Our team assists with digital bookings, ensuring a smooth and inclusive process.

  • Paper Waste Reduction

We minimise printing by offering digital receipts, encouraging brochure return and reuse, and promoting a ‘take only what you need’ approach to physical handouts.

  • Upcycled Souvenir Bags

We are working on creative reuse initiatives, such as repurposing old maps into reusable souvenir bags, adding a meaningful eco-story to your purchase.

  • First Nations Products

Our gallery proudly showcases authentic First Nations artwork and cultural items. These are sold on consignment, with 90% of profits going directly to artists. Supporting these pieces helps preserve cultural stories and support Indigenous creators.

  • Locally Made, Eco-Friendly Products

We champion products made across Quilpie Shire and broader Outback Queensland — from handcrafted opal jewellery to bush honey and artworks. This reduces product miles, supports small businesses, and keeps visitor dollars in the local economy.

  • Energy-Efficient Operations

We have upgraded to LED lighting throughout the VIC, reducing energy usage by an estimated 2,798 kWh per year and lowering our environmental impact.

  • Recycling & Green Waste

We recycle packaging materials and reduce landfill waste through responsible waste separation and composting initiatives, wherever possible.
